Harvest review
Prior to Harvest, Neil Young had two solo albums that he recorded with Crazy Horse (both
incredible) and one without them. With the death of guitarist/singer Danny Whitten, Neil Young's new backing band went by the name of
The Stray Gators. While on his album Everybody Knows This is Nowhere it is the electric songs that are well-known, with
Harvest it is the softer tracks that had commercial success
and ever lasting appeal.
The album starts by defining the overall Nashville theme with the opening track "Out On the Weekend." The most commercial song, "Heart of Gold" is a classic and features
Linda Ronstadt on background vocals. Though, the track "Old Man" is a really just as fine of a composition.
The acoustic guitar and soft singing set the back-drop, while the
complementary background singing, banjo, and guitar
melody tie everything together to yield one Neil Young's best songs. The simple
acoustic "The Needle and the Damage Done" was written for the late Crazy
Horse member Whitten.
The tracks "Are You Ready For The Weekend," "Alabama," and "Words" are the electric tracks and are all solid, and they add to the dynamics and flow of a
true classic album; with "Words" offering a thoroughly enjoyable contrast of Neil's whining guitar and Ben Keith's melodic pedal steel.
Neil young's Harvest went to number one in 1972. It was not a mistake.
