Muddy Waters - cd reviews and discography

There is truly a lot of Muddy Waters to choose from. We enjoy his live material the most. But this page is designed to highlight some of the other key Muddy Waters recordings. The essential Chess recordings are available in several different compilations, from single discs to four disc packages.

Primary differences of The Chess box over The Anthology
1. There is more of the early material if you are not going to also get Rollin' Stone: the Golden Anniversary Collection
2. There is more material from the Muddy Waters Sings Bill Broonzy album, which is excellent.
3. Lots of other unreleased material, like on the Chess Box disc three there are five songs recorded in June of 1963 that are great; "Elevate Me Mama" through "Thing that I Used To Do."

King of Chicago Blues 1941 - 1955 - Four disc, 96 songs
The Chess Box Set 1947 - 1972 - Three discs, 72 songs
The Anthology:'47-72  1947 - 1972 - Two discs, 50 songs
His Best:1947 to 1955 1947 - 1955 - One Disc - 20 songs
His Best:1956 to 1964 1956 - 1964 - One Disc - 20 songs
Rollin' Stone: The Golden Anniversary Collection 1947 - 1952 - Two discs - 50 songs
The Definitive Collection 1947-1972 One Disc - 24 songs
The Real Folk Blues / More Real Folk Blues 1947 - 1964 - One disc - 24 songs
Martin Scorsese Presents The Blues: Muddy Waters 1941 - ? - One disc - 16 songs
The Complete Plantation Recordings 1941 - 42 - One disc - 22 songs

The Chess Box has been around for sometime so there are often good prices on second hand copies.

For large appetites

Option One (Very little overlap with the exception of disc one of The Chess Box and Rolling Stone.)
The Complete Plantation Recordings 1941-1942 Rollin' Stone: The Golden Anniversary Collection 1947-1952 The Chess Box Set 1947-1972
Option Two (Hardly a songs overlap. Since the four disc set, King of the Blues is very inexpensive ($18 new last time I checked) and the other two recommendations can likely be purchased second hand at good prices, you'll likely find these three essential releases (six discs) less expensive than option one)
King of Chicago Blues
1947 - 1955
His Best:1956 to 1964 Sings Big Bill Broonzy / Folk Singer 1959 / 1963
Below is a select discography of some of the better Muddy Waters compilations and essential recordings, with an emphasis on what is fairly to buy as many releases are out of print.

King of Chicago Blues

Press Release
Apart from the 10-years-younger and still surviving B B King, Muddy Waters (1915-1983) was arguably the most internationally renowned ambassador of the blues of the post-WW2 electrified generation, in his case a pivotal figure in the development of a southern rural upbringing and style translocated to, and transformed in, the urbanized setting of Chicago. Whereas the majority of subsequently well known migrating bluesmen made their recording debut after their move to a city, Muddy was first captured on tape in rural Mississippi in 1941 and '42 by Alan Lomax. 13 of those 'field' recordings open this 4CD set, allowing the er to then hear how Muddy progressed, amplified and matured his performances once he had settled in Chicago, where he recorded briefly for Columbia in 1946 (the balance of Disc One) before being signed by the Chess brothers in 1947. It was as a Chess recording artist that he soon became top dog on the burgeoning Chicago blues scene. Discs 2-4 of this set cover all of his important recording up to end-1955, including the 12 R&B chart hits that put him at the forefront of that era's Chicago bluesmen and founded his international reputation.

Folk Singer
Muddy Waters Folk Singer is not folk music, rather blues. The title was a marketing theme. This gem of an album includes Muddy Waters and Buddy Guy on guitar, and on most of the tracks Willie Dixon plays bass and Clifton James plays drums.

The five bonus tracks are electric and were recorded on 4/9/1964, and Oct. 1964 with two different line-ups. The first two are available on other collections including The Chess Box, The Anthology, and His Best 1956 - '64.

Sings Big Bill Broonzy / Folk Singer
This package is two strong Muddy Waters albums released on a single disc. The Bill Broonzy material is rare, and really good. Most compilations don't have any or much of this material. However, The Chess Box's last five tracks from disc two are either from this album or recorded with the same line-up.
