Pink Floyd The Wall Review

The Wall review

Is The Wall a Pink Floyd album or a Roger Waters album with David Gilmour, Nick Mason, and Richard Wright serving as a back up band? Arguably, either answer is correct. This album, like Pink Floyd's previous three albums, is one concept spread across the album. To the mainstream audience The Wall is more accessible album than their previous albums, but Pink Floyd is not a mainstream band. To appeal to a wider audience they changed their writing approach significantly. Rather than relying on creative musical passage to tell their story, the message is relayed with more lyrics, and much shorter songs.

Overall, The Wall has a lot of great material. Certainly, its two most popular songs "Another Brick in the Wall Part 2," and "Comfortably Numb" are indeed superb songs. Even though we have heard them so many times we still enjoy them. The rest of the album has a mix of average to good music.

Our bottom line on The Wall is that there is just too much average material within this CD to call this a great album. Instead, it is an ordinary album with some great songs. But just because The Wall doesn't rank as high as it's predecessors, doesn't make it a worthwhile addition to a CD collection.  It is available in other formatsBarry Small ©

Released - 1979
Label - EMI

The Wall is these formats.
*The Wall Live, with a deluxe booklet.  This version has some additional
   tracks

* Video Soundtrack The Wall DVD  /  The Wall VHS

* Roger Waters solo band has a live version of this album from 1990 in
   audio or video.

We certainly do not think it is worth owning more than one format of The Wall. We suggest either Pink Floyd version over the Roger Waters.  Pink Floyd's live version has has a few additional tracks that are not on the studio release.
