Nuthin' Fancy is
Lynyrd Skynyrd's third album. Their first two records are super, so to
exceed their early success would be quite a feat. Nuthin' Fancy
is not quite up to the same level, but it is quite good. This album
certainly shows a bit more diversity to their sound and songwriting
than their previous albums. For example, the track "Made in the
Shade" is their attempt at bluegrass, and it is quite
successful; complete with mandolin, dobro, harmonica, and even some yodeling.
The track "Am I Losin'" has a tone reminiscent of many
great classic sounds. Overall, the song is heavily influenced by Marshall
Tucker's classic "Can't You See." The guitar solo is
signature Allman Brothers
style that segues into a brief "Sweet Home Alabama" riff,
that leads back into the vocals; a good song indeed. Then we have
some good classic rock 'n roll served Skynyrd style with tracks like
"Saturday Night Special" and "On the Hunt." Both
of these tracks have excellent bass holding the foundation of the
song, while perfectly setting up the guitar solos.
