Little Feat

With the 2008 release of Little Feat's release Join the Band, it seemed like a good opportunity to put a little section in our website about them.

Join the Band is a interesting concept of recording their classics  fresh along with some covers and bringing in a host of musicians that have admired Little Feat. The guests on the release include Jimmy Buffett, Dave Matthews, Emmylou Harris, Chris Robinson, Bob Seger, Vince Gill, Bela Fleck, Brooks and Dunn, Sonny Landreth, Mike Gordon (Phish), Jim Mayerand Inara George. Below are the credits by song.

With such a strong list of guests I was anxious to hear the results. Certainly the sonic quality is very high quality.  They tackle their most enduring material with a vengence. In fact, they start the disc with a superb rendition of "Fat Tub in the Bathtub."

The guests vary in background. Bob Seger, the Detroit rocker leads the band through a rocker with a modern Chuck Berry feel with a heavy guitar emphasis.

LITTLE FEAT THROWS A PARTY
WITH NEW “JOIN THE BAND”

Group Teams With Guest Artists Jimmy Buffett, Dave Matthews, Vince Gill, Chris Robinson, Emmylou Harris, Brooks & Dunn, Bob Seger, Inara George, Sonny Landreth and Others
Produced by Bill Payne and Mac McAnally

Album in Stores August 26th on 429 Records .

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Forty years into an iconic career that has produced dozens of wonderful songs and a host of admiring musical peers, Little Feat has united the two with a new release, Join the Band, that features some of their classic tunes – “Fat Man in the Bathtub,” “Dixie Chicken,” “Sailing Shoes,” “Oh, Atlanta” - re-recorded with creative friends like Dave Matthews and Jimmy Buffett among many others (see above), as well as new material like Woody Guthrie’s “This Land Is Your Land.”

A distinctive and eclectic blend of rock, funk, folk, jazz, country, rockabilly, and New Orleans swamp boogie, Little Feat’s musical style was forged when Lowell George was fired from Frank Zappa’s Mothers of Invention and told to form his own band. Bill Payne, Richie Hayward and Roy Estrada joined with him to create Little Feat, a band that would continue recording, touring and transcending musical boundaries long after the tragic and premature death of its founder. “LITTLE FEAT: JOIN THE BAND” is in stores August 26th on 429 Records (Savoy Label Group).

JOIN THE BAND was an idea born in 2004 just after original Little Feat keyboardist Billy Payne had played on Jimmy Buffett’s chart topping album, License to Chill. Jimmy suggested flying the band out to his Shrimp Boat Sound studios in Key West to put together the all star project that had been planned for years prior. With the production team of Payne and Buffett associates Mac McAnally and Alan Schulman in place, the project began to take shape.

Just as it was impossible to easily categorize the sound of Little Feat, JOIN THE BAND is a true collaboration amongst stellar talents—the current members of Little Feat including Billy Payne ( keyboards), Richie Hayward (drums), Paul Barrere (guitar), Sam Clayton (Percussion), Kenny Gradney (bass), Fred Tackett (guitar) and Shaun Murphy (vocals) would often provide backup on songs sending tracks to artists giving them full reign over their contribution. Some songs such as Woody Guthrie’s “This Land Is Your Land” feature Little Feat members on vocals with guest artists Mike Gordon from Phish laying down the bass. The resulting confluence of Feat, Phish, Guthrie, blues folk and gospel creates a musical gem unique to the spirit of “JOIN THE BAND.”

Little Feat will be on tour throughout the Summer and Fall of 2008—dates TBA.

429 Records is a unit of the Savoy Label Group (SLG). SLG is the North American unit of CME (Columbia Music Entertainment), the oldest music company in Japan. The Savoy Label Group has evolved into a leading independent company in the adult music genres consistently outperforming competitors in key music categories as monitored by Billboard Magazine. This 1978 live album remains a serious contender for one of the best live rock albums ever etched, standing toe to toe with live classics from the Band, Allman Brothers, and the Who. Recorded during concerts in London and Washington, D.C., Waiting for Columbus vividly captures the L.A. sextet at a crossroads between its swampy mid-'70s fusion of blues, country, and New Orleans R&B, and the more eclectic jazz accents introduced later in the decade. If the late Lowell George's influence had diminished in the studio, his presence dominates here in rowdy, righteous vocals, the mercurial tang of his indelible slide guitar, and a set-list laced with his songs. While still riveting in its initial, abridged CD release, this remastered two-disc edition expands and resequences the songs into a full concert set, with encore. Two deleted tracks are further augmented by 10 additional performances to make this a definitive edition of a classic album that really will boogie your speakers away. --Sam Sutherland

Little Feat - Reviews and recommendations
Born in the heart of Hollywood, Little Feat wrote iconoclastic songs that combined rollicking rhythms and tight phrasing with cinematic lyrics about pill-popping truck drivers and burnouts sleeping in broken-down cars dreaming of hamburgers. Rhino Records salutes the band that's always "Willin'" with the group's first-ever, career-spanning single-disc compilation.

THE BEST OF LITTLE FEAT contains 17 remastered versions of classic tracks released between 1971 and 1998 and follows the band's evolution from the Lowell George-led original to the modern-day incarnation that reunited in 1987 -- almost a decade after George's untimely death in 1979.

Arranged chronologically, the compilation features all of the Little Feat signature songs including the New Orleans shuffle of "Fat Man In A Bathtub" and "Dixie Chicken," as well as the live versions of "Oh Atlanta" and "All That You Dream" from the group's stellar live album, Waiting For Columbus. THE BEST OF LITTLE FEAT also showcases the version of "Willin'" that appeared on Sailin' Shoes -- the group's 1972 sophomore album. Originally released on Little Feat's 1970 self-titled debut, the song was reworked and recorded for Sailin' Shoes with the Flying Burrito Brothers' pedal steel player, "Sneaky" Pete Kleinow.

THE BEST OF LITTLE FEAT opens with the twisted humor of "Hamburger Midnight," a song recorded in 1971 by the band's original line-up -- vocalist and guitarist, George; keyboardist and vocalist, Bill Payne; drummer, Richie Hayward; and bassist Roy Estrada. The remaining tracks capture the band's trademark idiosyncratic mix of musical styles including the scalding Southern funk brewed with New Orleans rhythms that drives "Tripe Face Boogie" and "Rad Gumbo," the mellow groove of "Fool Yourself" and the plaintive melancholy of George's slide work on "Roll Um Easy."

The collection also contains highlights taken from nearly a decade of music recorded after Little Feat reunited in 1987. Let It Roll, the band's comeback album, featured original members Payne and Hayward along with longtime Featsters vocalist and guitarist, Paul Barrere; bassist and vocalist, Kenny Gradney; and percussionist, Sam Clayton as well as two new members -- guitarist, Fred Tackett and vocalist, Craig Fuller. For the 1995 release -- Ain't Had Enough Fun -- vocalist Shaun Murphy replaced Fuller.

Bud Scoppa -- who earned a Grammy-nomination with his liner notes for Rhino's Little Feat box set, Hotcakes and Outtakes -- aptly characterizes the spirit of the album: "What's particularly striking about this collection is that, although it spans more than 30 years, every note and every word bears the unmistakable stamp of Little Feat. If you want to know what has made this band so special, here's your proof, skinned back to the real nitty-gritty."
