Shady
Grove review
Shady
Grove is a collection of songs that influenced Jerry Garcia and
David Grisman that were recorded in the early 1990's at Grisman's
studio. The songs styles include hints of acoustic blues, jug,
country, dawg, bluegrass, and more. This was released after
the death of Jerry Garcia and the songs were taken from David
Grisman’s vault. Many
fans are thankful that David Grisman had the foresight to have his
tape machine running so frequently when the two masters would get
together to play music.
This
release includes many songs that the band performed in concert.
Certainly the title track is among the best on this CD, a great
version of "Shady Grove" is also included on their CD The
Pizza Tapes. Grateful
Dead fans will be sure to enjoy their interpretation of "Jackaroo,"
a staple with the Grateful Dead.
Of the
thirteen songs: five are duets, two of which Garcia plays banjo;
five songs include David Grisman quintet members Joe Craven and Jim
Kerwin; and three tracks are trios that include guests Bryan Bowers
(autoharp), Matt Eakle (flute) and Will Scarlet (harmonica).
The CD comes with a
forty-four page book that includes the lyrics, great pictures, the
history of the songs and more. by Barry
