Breakdown
review
The album
Breakdown is the third
release by Old and in the Way, the short-lived bluegrass band of
all-star bay area musicians. This
package includes alternative versions of six songs from their first
self-titled release.
Two
original Jerry Garcia instrumental compositions are included, “Old
and in the Way Breakdown,” and “Jerry’s Breakdown.” They are
both solid numbers featuring outstanding soloing from all band
members. Some of the best songs are the Peter Rowan originals; his
voice is perfect for this music. For example, the rendition
“Midnight Moonlight” is performed extraordinarily and in
my opinion, surpassing the electric rendition that was commonplace
for the Jerry Garcia Electric Band.
Another strong track included for your listening enjoyment is
the rendition of the Rolling Stones’ “Wild Horses.” It is
interpreted exceptionally well with Vassar Clements adding superb
melodic phrasing throughout. Then, David, Jerry, and Vassar each
take their turn during the instrumental to show their chops.
This
release offers the best value of the first three Old and in the Way
releases clocking in at about seventy minutes, while their
self-titled album is about 42 minutes and That
High Lonesome Sound is 48 minutes. All three of the releases are
worthwhile, though if you are on a budget this is the one to get. by Barry
