Fallout from the Phil
Zone review
Fallout
From the Phil Zone is a collection of songs throughout the Grateful Dead’s career.
Bassist Phil Lesh selected the songs, and they include bits of shows
that probably wouldn’t make it out of the Grateful Dead’s vault
otherwise or are some of his favorite versions of chosen songs.
Fallout
From the Phil Zone features music from 1967 to 1995. However, the predominance is from the
Pig Peg era. He is on the whole first disc and almost half of the
second. And, three songs, “Dancin' In The Street,” “Viola Lee
Blues,” and “Midnight Hour” combined clock in at over 72
minutes. Certainly noteworthy is “Hard to Handle”; it is
released in audience format, because a soundboard of the show
doesn’t exist. Many Grateful Dead fans claim this version of the song while others argue for the April 29, 1971, version
(released on Ladies and Gentlemen). My vote goes to April 29.
Fallout
From the Phil Zone includes a multitude of diamonds in the rough. If you favor the early
periods you'll want this: otherwise, it is nice, but
non-essential. by
