Dick's Picks 26 Review - Grateful Dead

Dick's Picks 26 review

Dick’s Picks Volume 26 is a combination of two April '69 Grateful Dead concerts.  The contents include the complete concert from Minneapolis, MN from April 27, and excerpts from the previous night in Chicago, IL.  The featured evening would have been a longer performance, but as Garcia explains after the sets last song, "Turn on Your Lovelight," that the band was late and they ran out of time.

The first disc of Dick's Picks 26 begins with highlights from the April 26 show. The concert begins with four Garcia / Hunter songs from the album they were working on, Aoxomoxoa, that was released in June of 1969. Three of the songs feature acoustic guitars, and the renditions have a warmth and friendliness to them making them more enjoyable than their studio counterparts.

The real treat of the April 26th show is a super version of the often played "The Other One."  This version they incorporated "The Eleven" within the arrangement quite successfully.  This added intensity to an already thrilling song.  Phil leads them back into "The Other One."

Also on disc one is the beginning of the complete featured performance, April 27, 1969.  The concert is sandwiched within "Turn on Your Lovelight," which begins and concludes the set.  The first three songs of the set are a warm up to the meat of the show.  The transitions from song to song are tight, and the rendition of "Me and My Uncle" is superb.

The second disc of Dick's Picks 26 is one non-stop creation of music. It begins with a gorgeous rendition of "Dark Star." Jerry and Phil dominate this version and before the second verse Garcia sails perfectly back into the melody of the song. Not surprising, "The Eleven" is a powerful rhythmic song that creates an intensity that is sure to please lovers of primal Dead.

I do not expect to hear too many complaints about this release.  It contains a complete show, super bonus material, and rare items, particularly "The Other One" sandwich. This will not replace Live Dead, but will sit side by side with it.
