Dick’s
Picks Volume 2 was recorded October 31, 1971, at the Columbus
Theater in Columbus, OH.
This performance was the tenth since Keith Godchaux joined
the band. There is only one CD included which is unusual for the
Dick’s Picks series, they are typically three.
The
lone disc begins with the Grateful Dead’s classic “Dark Star.”
This one is great with several interesting themes in it, but
it is not better than the “Not Fade Away” > “ Goin’ Down
the Road Feeling Bad (GDTRFB)”
> “ Not Fade Away.”
The trio of songs transition perfectly and all three build
powerful peaks, but the instrumentals are not so long that they lose
the listeners attention.
The disc also has a rare pre retirement “St. Stephen”
with Keith.
