Dave's Picks Vol. 8

Dave's Picks Vol. 8 brings us an early Brent Mydland era show. Just what I have been waiting for.

The first set starts with a solid "Feel Like a Stranger," the conclusion of the guitar solo seemed a bit off, which otherwise would have been tremendous take. Jerry follows with "Loser" and the guitar solo conclusion had something extra in it, really powerful and long lasting, chilling. Bobby counters with "Cassidy" and it is tight, with the closing solo spot on to lead to the vocal line. Next up is "Ramble on Rose." This is an excellent version. The 1973 renditions have that nice barrelhouse piano feel. Since then "Ramble on Roses" have grown to be more dynamic and the delivery on this version is superb; both the guitar solo and vocally. In fact, with the singing Jerry digs down deep, even hitting those vocal hollers that are characteristic of 1978. Bobby goes for some blues with "Little Red Rooster," and his slide solo is the low point of the release. "Bird Song" is played in electric format for the first time since 1973, who would have known. A few country covers follow. Then, "Maybe it Was the Roses," Garcia sings it beautifully and he ends the instrumental very concisely. Three more set one songs continue on disc 2. The set closer "Deal" is noteworthy indeed.

The first set was generous in length. Jerry stuck to the ballads for the most part, and Bobby balanced them with faster numbers, which combined, yielded an extremely satisfying set. On a personal note, I quite enjoyed Garcia's song selections. Except for "Ramble On Rose," all the songs came from his solo albums, Garcia or Reflections, two releases I am quite fond of.

The second set begins with "Scarlet Begonias" > "Fire On the Mountain," truly exceptional. I thought the first instrumental within "Scarlet" was really impressive. The transition into "Fire" was right on too. ""Samson" was tasty. The version of "Ship of Fools" is excellent rivaling the great '74 versions; Phil has some great lines in this song!

The second set continues on the third disc. First up is "Playing in the Band" and what struck me is the fine interact between Jerry and Brent.

For the encore, Jerry decides to go even earlier into his song book with "Uncle John's Band."

The second set was just as satisfying as the first set. More so? Both sets were excellent. For a fan of Jerry's song selection in set one, I probably enjoyed this more than most. The second set is hard to find much wrong with. The concert had a great flow to it. Very tight and the mishaps were very minimal.

The sound quality is very good. Though following a multi-track release, Veneta, which is still fresh in my mind, the difference between a multi-track and two-track is noticeable. The main negative is that Brent is up in the mix, and when he plays loud it drowns out Bobby's guitar.

The release was sold out before the shipping date and I don't expect too many unhappy customers. Outstanding.

It's our last release of the 2013 Dave's Picks series and this next one's a fox, literally. We're making our first foray into the 80s (don't expect it to be the last!) with the complete show from 11/30/80, Fox Theatre, Atlanta, GA. Fans of "The Fox" often debate the merits of this highly-esteemed performance, as in they find it hard to narrow down their favorite bits since this night is replete with many. From a spirited opener with an era-defining rendition of "Deal" to a soaring and powerful second set featuring one of the best ever versions of "Scarlet>Fire," there's no doubt the band was on their game and sound man Dan Healy was too. As the liners put it, "fast or slow, Jerry or Bob, routine or rare: they nail them all." Multiple listens have been said to yield un-ending revelations (even auras!), you'll just have to tune in to see where you land on the spectrum. Wherever this exceptional show takes you, it all adds up to over 3 hours of extremely fun listening. Hotlanta, indeed!
