Skydog: The Duane Allman Retrospective

Dave's Picks Vol. 5 brings us a release from one of my favorite periods of Grateful Dead eras, late 1973. The last release from this period was Road Trips: Vol. 4, Number 3: Denver 1973 and prior to that it was the superb box-set Winterland 1973, which  included all three Winterland shows, 11/9, 11/10, and 11/11, plus a bonus disc of the key portion of the 12/4 show.

Included is the complete concert from the Pauley Pavilion located on the campus of UCLA, in Los Angeles, CA. The concert  is noteworthy for being one of the three infamous musical segments pairing "Playing In The Band" > "Uncle John's Band" > "Morning Dew" > "Uncle John's Band" > "Playing In The Band." The other two are, 11/10/73 and 2/23/74, and have been previously released as Winterland 1973 and Dick's Picks Volume 24.

The first set fits nicely on one disc. It is a solid set, which  includes two longer jam tracks, "Here Comes Sunshine" and "China Cat Sunflower" > "I Know You Rider." Both are above fine versions.  The 1973 arrangements of "Here Come Sunshine" are always special as this rendition testifies. There are also a number of nice short songs. The tone of Keith's piano is quite nice as he add melodic touches throughout the set. The third song of the concert Bobby delivers a really heart felt version of "Looks Like Rain." Toward the end of the set beginning with "China Cat Sunflower" > "I Know You Rider" to the end of the set is all mighty fine. All three songs that followed "Rider" all have good 1973 arrangements and bring the set to a close rather nicely.

The second set begins with a few warm-up tracks before they venture into the previously mentioned musical segment; "Playing In The Band" > " Uncle John's Band" > " Morning Dew" > " Uncle John's Band" > " Playing In The Band."

The third disc continues the second set. All good, and the "Eyes of the World" > "Sugar Magnolia" is especially a treat. The "Eyes" is particularly lively as Billy drives the pace. The 1973 versions of "Casey Jones" are worthwhile as the song is well suited to piano runs that Keith certainly shines on.

I tend to look forward to the CD liner notes with releases. However, not when the contents venture into being thankful about the death of people with different political views. That aside,

I hope you got yours before it sold out.

From the Grateful Dead website

Dave’s Picks Volume 5

"UCLA, basketball, and the Grateful Dead — it all rolls into one. Teamwork, creativity, imagination, electricity, fundamentals, physical fitness, speed and quickness, the fast-break, dexterity, flexibility, footwork, crazy fingers, communication, discipline, the beat, rhythm and pace, offense, sacrifice, structured freelance, soaring through time and space, a dream, vision, and a plan. Never had such a good time." - Bill Walton

If November 1973 is considered one of the best months in Grateful Dead history and 11/17/73 is widely considered one of the best shows of the month - if not the year, then Dave's Picks Volume 5 is sure to score major points as the first quarter of 2013. Dave's Picks Volume 5, or as liner note scribe Bill "Grateful Red" Walton puts it - "a three-CD package of life, love, and hope, with over three hours of glorious music, and a set and song list to dream about," is major heavyweight Dead.

A stunner of a show, the band come out blazing with phenomenal renditions of new material from the recently released Wake of the Flood, unconventional set starters and some of the finest playing of the year. The first set features one of the hottest, most inspired versions of "Here Comes Sunshine" ever - widely regarded as one of the Top 3 versions of this song ever, and a "China>Rider" that's up there with the best of 1973-1974, and that's saying something. The second set shines the spotlight on the best of the three "Playing>UJB>Dew>UJB>Playing" musical palindromes (the 2nd of 3 times they did this sequence), with every second of it exciting and interesting. And they top that off with a late-show "Eyes Of The World" that is remarkably hot and energetic. To the ears of many, this is a top-25 Grateful Dead show of all time. And the sound quality of this one is perfect, full, clear, great bottom end, and overall terrific.

Mastered from the original analog tapes in HDCD by Jeffrey Norman, with fresh and fabulous cover art by Grateful Dead Comix artist Tim Truman and first-hand insight and wisdom on that very day from UCLA Basketball Center and student Bill Walton, this one is, by all accounts, incredibly satisfying.
