Dave's Picks Vol. 10
Dec. 12, 1969
Thelma, Los Angeles, CA

Dave's Picks Volume 10 offers a full Grateful Dead concert from December 12, 1969, at the Thelma, in Los Angeles, CA. It is very heavy on two themes. First, a ton of Pigpen material. Second, it includes early versions of seven of the eight tracks that would appear on their Workingman's Dead album.

I prefer the Keith and early Brent to the Pigpen material and for that matter, Tom Constanten Therefore, to me this is a release to make a playlist of what I'd likely playback in the future. That amounts to basically gathering the live renditions of Workingman's Dead cuts with some additions. From set one the "Cold Rain and Snow," and  "Me an My Uncle" opening that leads to trio of "Easy Wind," "Cumberland Blues," and "Black Peter." Of this material, the "Black Peter" stands out for Jerry's singing.

The second disc I liked the chunk of music beginning with "Casey Jones, leading to "Mama Tried," "High Time," and "Dire Wolf." The "High Time" really shines vocally, and the intro of "Dire Wolf" is cool to hear the origins of what would become beloved track that we would enjoy in fuller fruition in latter years. The same could be said of other songs, for example, "Casey Jones'," the guitar solo is raw and powerful, rather than the melodic radio ready rendition that ended up on the album. Similarly, from the third disc "Uncle John's Band" does not include the well known introduction melody or jamming themes we have grown to love and be awestruck by as it would develop the various formations through the decades. Though this version does include a transition into "He Was a Friend of Mine" which is a thrill to hear. The whole third disc is pretty good.

While the release is not a favorite of mine through and through, I do quite like the little playlist I made. For those that have the subscription, the bonus disc is from the previous evening at the same venue, Thelma. It includes only one duplicate song form the featured show, "Cumberland Blues." The material includes the jam classics of that era, track list below, and perfectly compliments the main release. Combined it provides a full picture of the Grateful Dead embarking in their new era that the 1970's would bring.

Dave's Picks Volume 10: Thelma, Los Angeles, CA 12/12/69 -

The last of a three-night run at a mysterious little club called "Thelma" found the Grateful Dead restoring glory to the Sunset Strip for what was once just a fleeting moment, now preserved for eternity with this here Dave's Picks Volume 10. Hot off the release of the highly-acclaimed Live/Dead and setting the stage for Workingman's Dead, 12/12/69 stands to represent the crux of the band's musical past, present, and future. Witness the first signs of country, folk, and Americana infiltrating an otherwise wildly experimental and anarchic period, evidenced by Pigpen-driven classics like "I'm A King Bee," "Hard To Handle," "Good Lovin'" and a whopping 30 minute+ version of "Turn On Your Lovelight," as well as over a half dozen then-new compositions which show the Garcia/Hunter songwriting duo elevating the Dead to higher ground. Thelma turns the heat up indeed!

Mastered in HDCD from the original soundboard recordings produced by Owsley Stanley, featuring the once lost, now found first reel, this is one full show you won't want to miss.
