Eric Clapton Crossroads 2: Live in the 70's - Review

Crossroads 2 is the second four-disc compilation of Eric Clapton’s music. While the first release entitled Crossroads is a career retrospective, this album is primarily a showcase of his live performances tour by tour between 1974 and 1978. Though a few studio tracks are included to start and close the disc.

This period of Clapton career offered some of his greatest albums. Throughout this box set most of his classics from 461 Ocean Blvd. and Slowhand are included and rarely disappoint. From Slowhand, the version of "The Core" and "Wonderful Tonight" are tremendous.

Crossroads 2 takes a journey chronologically basically from 1974 - 1978. Clapton's core back-up band is similar throughout the box set, with some differences from tour to tour that are noted within the track list.

There are many significant moments on this release. For extended jamming fans you'll treasure disc 2's pairing of Sonny Boy Williamson's "Eyesight to the Blind" > “Why Does Love Got to Be So Sad.” The duo of songs features Carlos Santana sitting in for a twenty five minute guitar fest.  Throughout the remaining discs you have an abundance of both standard blues numbers as interpreted by Clapton, as well as super versions of his classic compositions from the 70's.

The last disc is the only tour with no second guitarist in the band. I've read several reviews that complained about the material as the songs are shorter. That may be true generally, but Clapton does let loose on "Double Trouble," and the set is quite enjoyable. Worth stating again, the rendition of "Wonderful Tonight" is beautifully done from the introductory guitar melody, to the singing, to the guitar solo.

While Eric Clapton’s four-disc career retrospective Crossroads appeals to both causal and hard-core fans, Crossroads 2 appeals only to the latter. If four CD’s is not too excessive for your taste, you’ll find many fine moments here.  ~ by Barry Small ©
