Eagles
Welcome to our Eagles
section. Below we have a discography and provide comments about some of the releases. The discography is comprised of the following sections:
studio releases, compilations,
live recordings. Their videos are within
the live section.
Released Oct. 10/30/2007
Long Road Out Of Eden
Compilation Summary
The Eagles compilations come in three basic shapes. The two-disc
collection, two single disc recordings that cover different periods,
and box-set that has three discs of studio material and a that
features a live performance that is only available with the box. Editors
choice, Eagles The Very Best
Of.
Eagles Live
The Eagles have a few live releases as well as some videos. I
generally enjoy these live recordings, but the Eagles are not a
jamming band, and the live renditions are generally supplementary
rather than essential.

Eagles The Very Best
Of
|
|
Eagles:The
Very Best Of
is a two-disc overview that spans their
career. A limited edition included a third disc DVD of
"Hole In The Wall," etc. The
sound quality is excellent. A 48 page booklet is included with
commentary of each song in the words of Don Henley and Glenn
Frey.
This
covers most of the best material, but not all, tracks like
"Hollywood Waltz," "Pretty Maids All In A
Row," and "The Girl From Yesterday," which top my
list.

Hell Freezes Over
|
|
| The Eagles
Hell Freezes Over come in both audio and DVD editions. The DVD
has a different song sequence. The audio is marvelous in terms
of sonics. The first four tracks are new studio songs. The
first two are both recognizable hits, but the third track,
"The Girl From Yesterday" is a solid track that
takes them back to their roots, and should not be overlooked. The version of "Hotel
California" is excellent, the ending solo takes a Latin
approach; there is a single edition that is played on the
radio which trims most of the instrumental out that, yuck.

The
Eagles - Farewell 1 Tour - Live From Melbourne
|
|
Amazon.com
Thirty songs, spread out over two discs and well over two and a half hours, with fine performances, great sound, and good visual direction: it's all here on Farewell 1 Tour, a documentary of the Eagles' 2004 concert in Melbourne, Australia. At one point, the veteran band seemed unlikely to even make it to the new millennium, but here they are, mostly intact, with a string of hits dating back more than three decades. The majority of them are performed here, from the earliest ("Take It Easy," "Desperado," "Peaceful Easy Feeling") through "Hotel California" and "Life in the Fast Lane" and right up to "Love Will Keep Us Alive" (from Hell Freezes Over, their most recent recording with new material on it); there are also hits from Glenn Frey, Don Henley, and Joe Walsh's solo careers, and a few new songs as well, including Walsh's "One Day at a Time" (an earnest ode to his new-found sobriety) and "Hole in the World," Frey and Henley's moving, almost gospel-tinged reaction to the events of 9/11/01.
Guitarist Don Felder, who split acrimoniously with the band in 2001, isn't much missed, as replacement Steuart Smith plays the parts just as Felder did--i.e., pretty much exactly as they were recorded (indeed, pristine recreations of the studio versions of their songs has always been a hallmark of the Eagles' live shows).
As for the somewhat cheeky title, well, there's always been a certain smugness to the Eagles' sense of humor, and it's no different this time, as Frey doesn't even pretend that there won't be a Farewell 2 Tour in the future. And why not? These are good songs, played beautifully by the quartet (plus supplemental musicians) to audiences that love them. Bonus material is limited to perfunctory interviews with the band. --Sam Graham

Selected Works
|
|
Since The Eagles box-set, Selected Works:
1972-1999 includes a live concert
so we've mentioned it in
live section. More details of the box-set are within the
compilation sections.
The concert was their millennium performance. It
has its excellent moments, but the section from "Funky
New Year" through "All She Wants To Do Is
Dance" is not up our alley. The James Gang rendition of
"Funk 49" is miles better. Perhaps the highlight is
a scorching version of "Those Shoes," where Joe
Walsh pulls out his bag of tricks from his solo days.

Linda Rondstandt

|
| Several soon to be
Eagles were members of Linda Rondstadt
back-up band: Frey,
Henley, Meisner, and Leadon.
This is a very good album is you like
country music that emphasizes great steel guitar a solid
backing band, and great female vocals. The best of the
best session musicians throughout.

Common
Thread: The Songs of the Eagles
|
|
On Common Thread: The Songs of the Eagles,
the renditions are generally very close to the
originals. This leads to an interesting listen, even very enjoyable. The Eagles are classified in the rock and country genres; their musical roots are firmly in
country rock. The artists that pay tribute to them
on this CD are in the country camp displaying how deep their influence is. Hopefully it will break down some stereotypes of country music as some great sounds are on this disc.
Fans of country music will certainly treasure Common Thread: The Songs of the
Eagles, while rock fans will be introduced to great rendition of classic songs and may find an artist or two that knocks their socks off.
Liner notes include track personnel and a
brief essay.
