Dylan
and the Grateful Dead - The Band Connection
Bob Dylan
partnered with The Band in the mid to late 1960's and then
again in 1974. To date there are four
major recordings that are released with this collaboration; Planet
Waves, The Basement Tapes, Before The Flood, and Bootleg
Series Vol. 4, the latter are live performances.
The Band
was one of Bob Dylan's best live back-up bands, in our opinion. We have heard
numerous unreleased concert tapes as well as the commercial ones, and
Before The Flood, and Bootleg
Series Vol. 4 are at the top of the list. Currently
there are no live releases from his band from late 1980, but they
are quite good; excellent instrumentalists and back-up singers.
In the studio Bob Dylan
has had some sensational line-ups, one of which was The Band. The
tier of greatness to rank Dylan's studio material would lie more
with his writing of the time than his backing unit. That, and which
style of music you prefer, whether folk, blues, rock, gospel,
country, etc.
The songs
below have some connection between two or more of the following:
The Band, Bob
Dylan, Jerry Garcia, or the
Grateful Dead.
Another matter that they
have in common is that these songs are all phenomenal no matter whether
performed by The Band, Bob Dylan, Jerry Garcia, or the Grateful
Dead. We recommend them all.
While Tears
of Rage was penned by Dylan and Manuel, I think of it more as a
Band song.
