Live In Dublin
|
I enjoy Bruce Springsteen's
early music, but am not a huge fan. When the Born To Run 30th Anniversary
Edition was released I added a small Bruce
Springsteen section to the website. It is a box set that includes a re-mastered
rendition of Born To Run and two DVD's. The one that gets my
attention is a concert from Hammersmith Odeon in 1975. The quality
is outstanding, both audio and video. The only way to get the DVD is in
the box-set. Good news, even though the list price is $39.98, it
sells for much less. Just as good news, a two disc audio of the
concert was
released in 2006, Hammersmith Odeon London '75.
The Wings for Wheels DVD
is well done. I'm not sure if you'd watch it more than once. One
point that Bruce Springsteen makes, to paraphrase, "The hero
of the album is Roy Bittan. His piano really defined the
sound." I agree. To me, yhat is the bottom line of what makes
this a classic album.
Born To Run started with
his previous band. They auditioned 60 to get Max and Roy, 30 drummers and 30 piano players.
They were chosen because they had the musical reference points and understood the language.

COLUMBIA RECORDS TO RELEASE HISTORIC 'BORN TO RUN 30TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION' ON NOVEMBER 15
ORDER: Born To Run 30th
Anniversary Edition
Columbia Records will release the 'Born To Run 30th Anniversary Edition' box set on November 15. Personally supervised by Bruce Springsteen and Jon Landau, the box set includes "Hammersmith Odeon, London '75," an astonishing film of Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band's legendary 1975 concert at the Hammersmith Odeon in London; the new film "Wings For Wheels: The Making of Born To Run;" the classic album in remastered CD form; and finally, a 48 page booklet of previously unpublished photographs. With its two
DVDs, the package offers approximately four hours of previously unseen footage.
"I believe that the combination of the great 1975 concert footage, the brilliant documentary of the making of the album and the dazzling remastering of 'Born to Run' add up to a nearly perfect storm of Bruce's music," said longtime manager Jon Landau.
Spanning roughly two hours and ten minutes, the November 18, 1975 concert at London's Hammersmith Odeon finds an epic performance of sixteen Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band classics, including "Thunder Road," "Tenth Avenue Freeze Out,"
"Jungleland," and "Born To Run," as well as such other favorites such as "Kitty's Back" and
"Rosalita." The multiple-camera film of the complete concert will be available in its entirety and its original sequence, as newly edited by Emmy Award Winner Thom
Zimny. "Hammersmith Odeon, London '75" is the only full-length concert film ever released of Bruce and the E Street Band's first 25 years.
Zimny's production team painstakingly cleaned the original negatives and digitally restored the footage, ultimately presenting this indispensable concert in vibrant color and detail. Producer Bob Clearmountain remastered and remixed the DVD in both stereo and 5.1 surround sound. Zimny has worked with Springsteen on several projects, including editing the Emmy-winning "Live in New York," the quadruple-platinum certified, Emmy-nominated "Live in Barcelona" and the "VH1 Storytellers" films. Clearmountain is the legendary mixer who has often collaborated with Springsteen over the last twenty- five years, most famously on 'Born in the USA.'
The ninety-minute documentary "Wings For Wheels: The Making of Born To Run" chronicles the definitive story of the creation of 'Born To Run,' from songwriting to production and beyond. "Wings For Wheels" boasts archival film never shown publicly, including substantial footage of Springsteen and the E Street Band recording the album, 1975 concert film and other footage shot between 1973 and 1975. The film also features exclusive footage of Springsteen playing solo piano and guitar versions of songs from 'Born To Run.'
In addition, "Wings For Wheels" incorporates newly filmed interviews with Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, including former members who played on the album, as well as the production team. In newly shot footage from Asbury Park, NJ, Springsteen discusses his personal feelings about the making of the iconic album in great depth; the footage with Springsteen includes the musician reflecting on outtakes and unreleased tracks from the album for the first time since 1975. The DVD of "Wings For Wheels: The Making of Born to Run" ends with stunning bonus footage of three songs recorded live at Los Angeles' Ahmanson Theater in 1973: "Spirit In The Night," "Wild Billy's Circus Story" and
"Thundercrack."
Finally, the box set will feature a CD of the newly remastered 'Born To Run,' as well as a remarkable 48-page photo album of previously unpublished photographs with an introduction written by Springsteen. This is the first time Springsteen has allowed any of his catalogue to be fully remastered and he enlisted his longtime mastering guru Bob Ludwig to handle the job. The newly remastered version presents the masterpiece with striking clarity and presence. Widely regarded as one of the cornerstone albums in rock and roll history, 'Born To Run' has been recognized by many international polls as one of the greatest albums of all time. It has sold nearly nine million albums worldwide. Of 'Born To Run,' which was originally released August 25, 1975, Rolling Stone wrote, "It is a magnificent album that pays off on every bet ever placed on him… and it should crack his future wide open."

Live Set Debuts In Amazon's Top Ten
PBS Broadcasting Abridged Film To Massive Audience In June
'Live In Dublin' by Bruce Springsteen With The Sessions Band was released by Columbia Records last week to great acclaim, debuting among Amazon.com's top twenty DVDs and top ten CDs simultaneously and with the DVD seeing time at number one.
The New York Daily News' David Hinckley writes, "Using a big old band full of strings and horns, he got a sound that combined Saturday-night hoedown music, Fourth of July parade music, back-porch music and music from the cotton fields, all mixed with a spirit that stamps them as singularly Springsteen."
Here's what other critics are saying about 'Live In Dublin':
"Brilliant" - Associated Press
"Essential" - Philadelphia Inquirer
"Sheer exuberance." - NY Daily News
"Soul-stirring" - Billboard
"A" - Philadelphia Daily News
"Irresistible" - Boston Herald
Meanwhile, an abbreviated 60-minute version of the film has been broadcast on almost 300 PBS affiliate stations throughout the country this month. NJN (New Jersey Public Television) premiered the film April 30. NJN producer Donna Journigan said, "NJN, New Jersey's own public television station was proud to be the presenter of the world premiere right here in Bruce's home state. It has been extremely well received... We've even garnered international response."
Columbia Records released 'Bruce Springsteen With The Sessions Band Live in Dublin' June 5 as a concert DVD, Blu-ray Disc, and separate two-CD set release, as well as a combination DVD/CD package. The two-CD set, DVD and Blu-ray Disc each feature 23 songs drawn from the band's performances in Dublin, Ireland at The Point on November 17, 18 and 19, 2006. Songs include fan favorites from 'The Seeger Sessions,' radical interpretations from the Springsteen songbook and rare songs appearing for the first time on any Springsteen release.

Columbia Records To Release 'Bruce Springsteen With The Sessions Band Live In Dublin' June 5 On DVD, Blu-ray Disc, 2-CD Set And Combo DVD/CD Set
Concert Features 23 Songs From November, 2006
Columbia Records will release 'Bruce Springsteen With The Sessions Band Live in Dublin' June 5, a concert DVD, Blu-ray Disc, and separate two-CD set release, as well as a combination DVD/CD package.
Springsteen's longtime manager Jon Landau said, "'Live in Dublin' charts the development of a band from an informal gathering in Bruce's living room to an onstage powerhouse. It also documents the growth in Bruce's vision of American music; it includes folk music, blues, Dixieland, country, swing, gospel, rock, down to and including his own writing. It's all performed with Bruce's classic energy and focus. I think it's some of the finest music he's ever made."
The DVD, Blu-ray Disc and CD captures the band during the finale of its multi-leg 2006 tour. The Word Magazine (UK) said of a concert on this tour, "I have never, make that NEVER, seen a show better than the one mounted by Bruce Springsteen and his band at Wembley Arena on Saturday, November 11, 2006." The Sunday Business Post Agenda (UK), in a 5 star review, said, "During the concert's numerous high points, the crowd was ecstatic and Springsteen was the preacher, spreading a welcome message: We're open all night."
Bruce Springsteen with The Sessions Band's tour last year prompted other incredible reviews. "Sometime, somewhere, a more dramatic and exhilarating confluence of music with moment may have existed... But in nearly 40 years of concert-going, I haven't witnessed one," said LA Times. The Washington Post declared, "It was the best live show I've seen in at least five years. (And I've seen a few.)" Meanwhile, The Independent (UK), said, "It's been an astonishingly rich evening." The Observer (UK) proclaimed, "Springsteen and the Seeger Session band were an inspiring triumph."
'Bruce Springsteen With The Sessions Band Live in Dublin' was produced by George Travis and produced and edited by Emmy Award winner Thom Zimny, who recently took home a Grammy Award for directing "Wings For Wheels: The Making Of Born To Run," a DVD in the acclaimed 'Born To Run' box set. Legendary mixer Bob Clearmountain mixed the DVD and Blu-ray Disc in both stereo and 5.1 surround sound. Bob Ludwig mastered the DVD and CD at Gateway Studios. The Blu-ray Disc was authored at Sony Pictures Digital Authoring Center. Documented with nine cameras, the concert was filmed in High Definition (HD). The Blu-ray Disc presents the show in full 1080 HD resolution along with uncompressed surround sound.

COLUMBIA RECORDS TO RELEASE BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN'S 'WE SHALL OVERCOME: THE SEEGER SESSIONS' ON APRIL 25
Columbia Records will release Bruce Springsteen's twenty-first album, 'We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions,' on April 25. The album features Bruce's personal interpretations of thirteen traditional songs, all of them associated with the legendary guiding light of American folk music, Pete Seeger, for whom the album is named. Speaking of the origins of the new music, Springsteen said, "So much of my writing, particularly when I write acoustically, comes straight out of the folk tradition. Making this album was creatively liberating because I have a love of all those different roots sounds... they can conjure up a world with just a few notes and a few words."
Springsteen recorded the album with a large ensemble. The musicians on the record are Springsteen (guitar, harmonica, B3 organ and percussion), Sam Bardfeld (violin), Art Baron (tuba) Frank Bruno (guitar), Jeremy Chatzky (upright bass), Mark Clifford (banjo), Larry Eagle (drums and percussion), Charles Giordano (B3 organ, piano and accordion), Ed Manion (saxophone), Mark Pender (trumpet), Richie "La Bamba" Rosenberg (trombone) and Soozie Tyrell (violin). Lisa Lowell, Patti Scialfa, Springsteen, Pender, Tyrell, and Rosenberg contribute backing vocals.
'We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions' will be released in DualDisc format, with the full album on one side of the disc and DVD content on the other side. The 30 minute video side of the DualDisc contains extensive behind the scenes footage of the recording of the album. In addition, the DualDisc package will contain two bonus tracks and a special booklet including a note from Springsteen.
Springsteen is planning a short tour in the U.S. and Europe to accompany the release of the album. He will be appearing with most of the musicians who appeared on the CD. Details will be announced separately.
According to Springsteen's longtime manager Jon Landau, "'We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions' has a lightness and ease to it, a sheer joyfulness, that makes it very special from top to bottom. Bruce has taken a core group of classic American songs and transformed them into a high energy, modern and very personal statement."
