Compilation discography w/ track lists
Bob Dylan’s has a number
of compilations. Generally,
they can be a good introduction to Dylan or can lay the foundation
of a collection which supplements of your favorite aspects of his
music.
The choices available are:
The Greatest Hits series that has three volumes.
Biograph - A box-set through 1985.
The Essential - A two-disc overview.
Of the compilations our
best recommendation would be to get Biograph
as it gives a superb sampling of his material and has loads of
unreleased versions, B-sides, etc. It even has some live material
from Bootleg Series Vol. 4
and Before The Flood,
etc. Not sure why this isn’t chronological, but it would be an
improvement. Beyond Biograph, I recommend you pick up the
complete albums that interest you the most.
If the box-set is too rich
in either dollars or quantity the next best choice is between Greatest
Hits Vol. 2 or The
Essential. They are both good introductions of Bob Dylan’s
material and are each two-disc packages. The Essential could
have easily fit another five or songs per disc. Dylan's Greatest
Hits Vol. 2 was released back in the LP days when the playing
time was typically 35 – 45 minutes per album so it is short too,
but is generally a few dollars less than The Essential.
For a sampling of Dylan's
later music Greatest Hits Vol. 3
doesn't overlap with any of the other compilations except for a few
tracks on The Essential.

Deluxe Edition
The 3 CD deluxe version is housed in a red cloth covered box with a magnetic hinged lid. The DYLAN logo is debossed on the outer lid, and the inside is covered in black velvet fabric with the Columbia logo gold foiled on the inside of the lid. Each CD is housed in an individual inner and outer sleeve. The outer sleeve art is iconic Dylan imagery while the inner sleeves are replica classic Columbia LP sleeves. The CDs themselves are replica vinyl discs. The 40 page booklet is perfect bound and contains extended liner notes and rare photos. Finally each box includes 10 limited edition postcard lithograph prints focusing on pivotal moments in Dylan's career.

I bought Biograph shortly after its
release and still find it a gem. With the Bootleg Series'
numerous releases some of the tracks on Biograph
are no longer rarities, if you collect that series. However,
this release also serves as a superb overview of Dylan's
career, too bad it is not chronological.
Biograph is not in-depth to the point
where you no longer want to get the albums of your favorite
periods, but it does smartly include the arguably the best
tracks from his releases. So it may suffice for the casual fan
for those releases.

This is a very good collection of Dylan performances throughout his career. It has a good flow. Beside the opening track, the material is
chronological. The album is a Japanese import and usually has a steep price tag.
Some of the album has been released and several tracks haven't. To me the most interesting material is the three tracks from Portsmouth, England in 2000. This is the band from
Love and Theft. I particularly like "Country Pie," a track that first appeared on
Nashville Skyline. I'd be interested in the Bootleg Series releasing a performance or generous (three or four discs) compilation of this line-up.
Three acoustic tracks, two - four and three tracks with The Band (primarily, the drummer varies), all from different times,
tracks five - seven.
