Allman Brothers Band Live Concerts

It's been a desire to want to provide some coverage of the live Allman Brothers archival series. I picked up the live 2003 DVD Live at the Beacon Theater featuring the Derek Trucks and Warren Haynes guitar attack many years ago and was a big fan of this line-up. I've now acquired enough of these live releases to roll out some commentary and recommendations.

What does this line-up offer? Well, Gregg's voice is so soulful and passionate, resulting in a very soothing listen. The initial attraction of  the Allman Brothers to me was the guitar lines, However, after gaining an appreciation of singing through listening to the likes of Gram Parsons and Norah Jones, I pay much more attention to Gregg's vocals than previously, and find very few voices that I enjoy hearing more than his. Especially on slow songs like "Stormy Monday," and Desdemona."

This guitar duo of Derek Trucks and Warren Haynes is deadly. I'm especially found of Derek Trucks playing. He plays Duane Allman's trade mark riffs better than anyone, and his own signature is just as inspiring. Perhaps the best slide guitarist on the planet. Meanwhile Warren is quite tasteful himself with his playing, and can play Elmore James riffs as good as anyone. Plus he's added a fine number of originals and cover songs to the bands set list.

In 2003 the Allman Brothers Band began selling their concerts online. This section of our website will document those. For The Allman Brothers Band's 40th anniversary in 2009 they played 15 shows at the Beacon Theater. During that run they brought out numerous guest to showcase. The run was dedicated to the memory of Duane Allman. Throughout these appearances you'll hear many one of a kind sets, as well as numerous rarities.

The 2009 Beacon is showcased on this page as the centerpiece our live latter day era Allman Brothers Band coverage. Then on supplementary pages, I've highlighted some of the other tours from various years

I haven't heard all of the Beacon shows, but I'll share with you my thoughts and provide comments of the shows I have. Each has something special to offer. Really, they are all worth getting. They're not inexpensive, but the music is extraordinary.

I've arranged most of the shows into styles as I see it, so you can compare. My top pick is:
3/20/09 Clapton

Then the other top picks.
3/14/09 - Jazz / Pedal Steel
3/23/09 - King Curtis & classic rock / blues w/ Widespread Panic
3/28/09 - Chuck Leavell / Grateful Dead
3/24/10 - Blues guitar guests galore
3/13/09 - Boz Scaggs / Asbury Jukes

We've linked to where you get them through Amazon. They are also available from the Allman Brothers Band website.

This section is primarily information from the Allman Brothers Band website, and our commentary and reviews. We did find some nice pictures from a Jambase article.

This section is a work in progress so stop back for planned updates. We'll be adding more commentary to the shows and have other supplementary additions.

Blues
Eric Clapton - 3/20/09 and 3/19/09 - This is the cream of the crop of the entire run. The 3/20 show Clapton plays a little longer with the band than the previous night. Derek and the Dominos!

3/24/10 - Guitarist's Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top, Bob Margolin from the Muddy Waters Band, and Sonny Landreth. Plus harmonica guests include Tom Doucette and, John Popper. The second hottest blues extravaganza after Clapton.

Cool stuff - Bringing it on home

The last three shows.

Allman Brothers Band
- 3/26/10 Beginnings - Set one the self-titled debut album. Set two, Idlewild South, their second album, plus encore.

Southern Rock -3/27/10 - Covers of Marshall Tucker Band's "Can't You See," and Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Free Bird." Add to that some Wet Willie songs. Lot's of guests. Be aware, that "Free Bird" is just the 3:45 introduction, not the lengthy guitar solos to follow, too bad, but this does sound really, really nice, Gregg on vocals.

Chuck Leavell / Grateful Dead - 3/28/10
- What a treat, Allman Brothers on their own, Allman's with Chuck Leavell for around an hour spread throughout the evening, and the Allman Brothers getting psychedelic with Bob Weir and Phil Lesh for an hour.

I've heard other shows with Bob Weir joining in with the Allman Brothers Band this is the best, plus all of the Chuck Leavell material too. Chuck Leavell has a nice tease of "Little Martha" during "Jessica."

R&B Horns
3/23/10 - A top pick for horns that showcases some R&B King Curtis style. The version of "Soul Serenade" is one of my favorite parts of the whole run. Throw in some classic rock and blues, with Widespread Panic joining in for Van Morrison's "And it Stoned Me" and Blind Faith's "Can't Find My Way Home." How about "Little Martha" > "Blue Sky" > "Little Martha"!!! This show has so much more.

3/13/10 - This R&B show features the Asbury Jukes, Boz Scaggs throughout the show as its highlights. During the first set The Asbury Jukes help out on "Into the Mystic" and "Southbound." Set two Boz Scaggs begins the set with a Dylan tune, "It Takes A Lot To Laugh, It Takes A Train To Cry." Boz stays on stage for a lengthy set and the Asbury Jukes join the festivities.

3/21/10 - This is another night that the Asbury Jukes added a R&B flavor. This set also features Susan Tedeschi for six songs including the encore. Bruce Hornsby also had a lengthy display of his improvisational talents.

Also noteworthy (More than)
3/14/09 - This show offers the jazziest flavor of the run with Randy Brecker on trumpet and Lenny White on drums on a large chunk of the show and they venture into Miles Davis' songbook with "In a Silent Way." Stanley Clarke even makes an appearance. For some pedal steel activity Robert Randolph joins for Turn On Your Lovelight" and "One Way Out."

3/16/09 - Not a show for long jams as the theme. Here you'll be treated to hints of Duane's session work pre-Allman Brothers with John Hammond and Bonnie Delaney as guests.

3/17/09 - Like the evening before, not a showcase of the long jams. Disc 1 is a superb set of Allman's, including some jam songs with "Rockin' Horse" and "New Instrumental,". Disc 2 they start with some songs by Cowboy. First is "Please Be With Me"; Duane would be proud of this, it was absolutely perfect, the first of three tracks, keyboardist Brian Mitchell's piano touches added nice melody.

To start the second set Sheryl Crow sits in for three classic rock tracks, a Dylan number, an ABB tune, and the first Allman Brothers Band version of Blind Faith's "Can't Find My Way Home." I wasn't too knocked out with this trio of songs. The Allman lay a deadly version of "Ain't Wastin' Time No More" that will leave you speechless. The third disc offers  an excellent introduction jam to "Hoochie Coochie Man" that reminds me of why I like the blues so much.

3/12/09 - This show had a combo of blues legend Buddy Guy and jam band legends Phish. Also of interest for Buddy Guy fans, the Allman Brothers Band show on 9/1/09, in Chicago, both Dave Mason and Buddy Guy made appearances.

3/9/09 - Taj Majal and The Band. I don't have this one, but would love to hear The Band set.

Allman Brothers Band Live Concert series CD reviews
The Allman Brothers at the Beacon Theater 2009
From the Allman Brothers Band website

Order live concerts from The Allman Brothers Band website

To commemorate their 40th anniversary, The Allman Brothers Band has released a Beacon Box 2009 live CD package, capturing all 15 sold-out shows from the group’s March 2009 stand at the venerable Beacon Theatre in New York City. This is the first time the band has made CDs available from their annual visits to New York, which date back to 1989 and includes 188 consecutive sold-out shows at the Beacon.

This run was dedicated to the memory of Duane Allman, seminal guitarist and founder of the band, and to help celebrate Duane’s legacy, 62 special guests shared the stage with the Allman Brothers Band. The list includes a “Who’s Who” of rock, jazz and jams greats, including Levon Helm, Taj Mahal, Buddy Guy, Boz Scaggs, Johnny Winter, Sheryl Crow, Widespread Panic’s Jimmy Herring and John Bell, Kid Rock, Billy Gibbons, Los Lobos’ David Hidalgo and Cesar Rosas, Bob Margolin, Phish’s Trey Anastasio and Page McConnell, Chuck Leavell, Jimmy Hall, Susan Tedeschi, Bob Weir, Phil Lesh and many others. Also appearing for two nights with the band was the inimitable Eric Clapton, who teamed with Duane Allman to record Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs in 1970, considered by many critics to be the finest guitar album of all time. This marked the first occasion that Clapton had played with the Allman Brothers Band in a public setting.

The fact that the band performed at its considerable best in its 40th year is a remarkable testament to the talents of this Rock and Roll Hall of Fame group. All the magic of their timeless classics, newer tunes and spectacular cover songs shines through on the Beacon Box live CD package. The 15 historical shows, containing 100 different songs, are packaged in a custom-made, hand-crafted, serial numbered box that has the Beacon Theatre’s marquee silkscreened across the front. In addition to the Beacon concerts, this box set include a special bonus performance of the Allman Brothers Band at Warren Haynes’ 20th Annual Christmas Jam, which occurred in December of 2008. Also included in the box set edition is a CD booklet with liner notes, set list and exclusive photos taken during the run by ABB Tour Mystic, Kirk West. Shows are available on an individual basis as well, so take advantage of this once in a lifetime offer to savor a once in a lifetime event!

From the Allman Brothers Band website.
They say lightning never strikes twice in the same place, but they're wrong! Many people thought it was virtually impossible for the second ABB show with Eric Clapton to equal the first, but in many ways this show surpasses Thursday's concert. There seems to be no ceiling to what the Allman Brothers Band was capable of in this Beacon run!

Check out the first set, a blockbuster that would be a worthy second set to most shows, complete with a "Mountain Jam" sandwich to open and close the set. "44 Blues" and "Gambler's Roll" provide some deep blues, and the end sequence of "Ain't Wastin' Time No More>Mountain Jam Reprise" is just as good as it sounds. Oteil's solo bass version of "Little Martha" adds a different twist to the Duane Allman classic, which had been played as a duet by Warren and Derek earlier in the run.

The second set is Clapton time, and Slowhand seems relaxed, comfortable and ready to jam. The Derek and the Dominoes classics sound just as good, if not better, than Thursday, but there are a few surprises in store. This performance of "Stormy Monday" might be the best ever, from Gegg's passionate vocals to the blues guitar master class being put on by Derek, Eric and Warren. Clapton soars even higher on this version of "Dreams" than he did on Thursday, and his jazzy explorations on "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" show Slowhand venturing far from his blues-rock comfort zone and proving that he still has his mojo. This "Layla" encore may be even more emotional and powerful than the one from the previous show, if that's possible.

Another historic must-have show!

From the Allman Brothers Band website.
The final show of the 2009 Beacon run was one for the ages! Phil Lesh and Bob Weir of The Dead added their own psychedelic flavor to this show, and former ABB keyboardist Chuck Leavell made a triumphant guest appearance on tunes like "Jessica" and "Mountain Jam."

The core band was hittin' the note like only they can, with the extended "Rocking Horse" a first set standout. Check out the teases and jams of everything from "Third Stone From The Sun" to "Blue Sky" wrapped up in this monster version! "Who To Believe" made its first appearance of the run, with Gregg singing from the depths of his soul on this number. Gregg's old Daytona pal Floyd Miles added bluesy soul on "Born Under A Bad Sign" and "Stormy Monday," and Chuck Leavell finished off the first set with a version of "Jessica" that stands with the best ever.

The second set was the Allmans meets the Dead, with fascinating results. This version of "Sugaree" is dripping with soul, and Chuck comes back out to lend his keyboard skills to an incendiary "Franklin's Tower." Leavell also joined the band for a ferocious "Mountain Jam" that ended the second set in style, before an extended "Statesboro Blues" encore finally ended the show at 12:38 AM, some four hours after it started!
